How we compare
Our scoring process, what we evaluate, and how providers earn their ranking.
Home Security Rating organizes home security providers into three categories: professionally installed systems, DIY systems, and camera systems. Within each category, we evaluate and score five providers on a 10-point scale to help you understand the landscape.
Our scoring criteria
Each provider is evaluated across several dimensions that reflect real-world ownership experience:
System capabilities
Hardware quality, detection accuracy, and coverage
Ease of use
Setup experience, app quality, and day-to-day usability
Value
Total cost of ownership relative to features delivered
Customer experience
Support quality, contract flexibility, and transparency
Innovation
Use of modern technology like AI detection and smart integrations
Reliability
System uptime, backup connectivity, and build quality
How rankings work
Providers are ranked within each category by their overall score, from highest to lowest. The top-scoring provider in each category receives our “Top Pick” designation.
Scores range from 1.0 to 10.0. We re-evaluate providers periodically as products, pricing, and services evolve.
System type distinctions
We are careful to distinguish between different types of security systems. Camera surveillance systems (like NVR setups) are not the same as alarm monitoring systems (which use sensors and dispatch emergency services). Both serve important security roles, but they function differently.
Each provider card includes a system type label so you can understand exactly what kind of security solution it provides.
Our goal is to give you a clear, honest starting point for comparing home security options — with transparent scoring and real-world evaluation criteria.
